What’s behind 112 Million Sick Days Taken by Workers Annually?
Written by Aimee Lowrey-Joyce | 10/09/2024
Last year, 112.5 million sick days were taken by people with long-term health conditions, yet only a third received employer support to return to work.
A study by the Centre for Economics and Business Research (Cebr) found a 27% rise in workers with long-term health issues over six years, reaching 10.3 million. Sick days increased nearly 70%, totalling 112.5 million in 2023.
Top causes of sick days, according to a OnePoll survey, include:
- Mental health (44%)
- Musculoskeletal issues (14%), often linked to poor home office setups
- Respiratory (7%) and gastrointestinal problems (7%)
Rehabilitation and Return to Work
The Association of British Insurers (ABI) reported that over 1.6 million people accessed health services via insurance in 2021, helping to shorten long-term absences. A review of 16,000 cases showed 86% of workers remained employed after using rehabilitation services.
Giving your employees access to health services can not only contribute to staff retention and a faster return to work when they have been off sick, but also contributes to overall employee morale which can lead to a more productive workforce.
